DEFRANCISCI HOUSE - 1993

DEFRANCISCI HOUSE - 1993

The vernacular architecture of the coastal Northwest, the layout of the Southern “dogtrot” floor plan, the site, climate, and client program all provide impetus for the design and organization of this 4,200-square-foot residence completed in 1993.  Two wings are separated by a taller central form that serves as entry, vertical circulation, and dining area.  This breezeway is on axis with a larger valley oak at the front entry, a distant mountain peak to the rear, and the prevailing breezes, to which it may be opened or closed.  The building, expressed first as a home, maintains its connection to agriculture by its proximity to a pasture, and its use of materials and color.  Hitching posts and watering troughs for horses at the porch also connect the building to the farm.
