MacCracken Robinson Architects was commissioned to design a new maintenance facility on a 95,000 square foot portion of the Olympic Golf Club Course in San Francisco, California. The existing maintenance facility consisted of a series of separated buildings that were in disrepair and undersized for interior coverage of equipment, administrative offices, and vehicle maintenance.

The program included site development and a new two-story 29,000 square foot main building maintenance facility with shop, equipment storage and offices with maintenance yard, fuel, wash station and fertilizer. We worked with a steel building company to fine tune the exterior envelope design while the lower floor and foundation were constructed on site.

The most challenging part of the project was the size of the building once the uses were consolidated, and how to not impose or distract from the beauty of the golf course located on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean. Keeping the form of the building below the tree line was a main concern, along with designing a long and narrow building to follow the terrain.

The Olympic Club was established in 1860 and is one of America's oldest athletic clubs. It has hosted numerous tournaments including the U.S. Open Championship, National championships and other prestigious competitions.
